Miscellaneous Ter’angreal

By Linda

Blue Stone Carving

a stone carving a little larger than her hand—it felt like stone; it might have been a carving, though it did not exactly look carved, for some reason—all deep blue curves vaguely like roots.

- The Path of Daggers, Unweaving

The carving was found in the Ebou Dar cache and was taken to Caemlyn. It may be with Elayne, or it may have been lost in the sacking and firing of Caemlyn.

According to Aviendha, this carving:

was for growing something. Not plants. It made her think of holes, only they were not exactly holes.

- Knife of Dreams, A Different Skill

Aviendha does not believe anyone has to channel to make it work, only sing the right song. While some have speculated that this is a Talisman of Growing, the Ogier say that they were given only one (see Talisman of Growing section). They prize memory, so if they lost one back in the past, they would remember this disastrous event. Furthermore, this ter'angreal is a little small for Ogier to handle easily. It could be some ter’angreal used in scientific experiments in the Age of Legends, on which the male Aes Sedai later modelled the Talisman of Growing. The Ways themselves were based on the results of studies of some of the Portal Stone worlds (The Great Hunt, What Might Be).

Another possibility is that the ter'angreal grows vacuoles, which were used in some scientific experiments by Aes Sedai in the Age of Legends. If this is so, the ter'angreal would be activated by Da'shain Aiel singing, not Ogier.

Bookmark Ter’angreal

Verin Mathwin hid her cipher book and report on the Black Ajah with a ter’angreal for making books invisible. It only works on books and consists of a long thin leather strap with steel weights on the ends that fit together. The strap is wrapped around the book/s with the end marking any page. The loose ends of the bookmark are twisted around one another and the weights fitted together and locked in place. The book/s and ter’angreal immediately disappear from sight (The Gathering Storm, A Visit From Verin Sedai). We’ll never know if Verin’s books that this bookmark hid were found among Egwene’s effects.

Callie’s Ter’angreal

The Tower has a ter’angreal that makes images of flowers and the sound of a waterfall (A Crown of Swords, The Triumph of Logic). It is believed by Aes Sedai to be useless. One of the Kin, Callie, tried to steal this ter’angreal when she was put out of the Tower, but was unsuccessful (see Security Measures section ). The original function of this object may have been to make view-walls or similar in the Age of Legends.

Carved Cluster of Dice

Liandrin’s group stole from the Tower a carved cluster of six spotted dice, joined at the corners, and less than two inches across in size. Its use is unknown to Aes Sedai. Channeling through it seems to suspend chance in some way, or twist it so that:

Tossed coins presented the same face every time, and in one test landed balanced on edge one hundred times in a row. One thousand tosses of the dice produced five crowns one thousand times.

- The Dragon Reborn, Questions

This appears to be similar to the minor Talent of duplicating ta’veren (see Weaves and Talents article). It is not known whether Moghedien or one of the Black Ajah has this ter’angreal.

Crystal Globes

Glass globes are stored along with other small items of the Power in a storeroom deep under the White Tower (The Gathering Storm, The Tower Shakes).

Elayne’s Green Stone Disc

Elayne made a plain green stone disc ter’angreal that allows someone otherwise not strong enough to work the invisibility trick (Lord of Chaos, Prologue). It was an original idea of Elayne’s and the only one of five attempts that was successful. Two did nothing, and two made the user blurry and nauseous.

Flat Silvery Ring

A flat silvery ring ten feet across and thin as a blade was in Rhuidean (The Shadow Rising, Rhuidean). It is not known if it survived Rand’s battle with Asmodean, and if so, whether it is in Cairhien or with the other Rhuidean ter’angreal.

Glass Blacksmith’s Puzzle

A thing that looked like a blacksmith’s puzzle made of glass was found in the Ebou Dar cache (The Path of Daggers, A Quiet Place). It was so heavy that Elayne dropped it. When she channelled into it, the first touch of her weave made her dizzy and unable to sleep for half the night (The Path of Daggers, Into Andor). This is not the first time that Elayne’s over-confidence with ter’angreal has caused a problem. It may be with Elayne, or it may have been lost in the sacking and firing of Caemlyn.

Glass Pendant

A glass pendant that shines blue in light is in the storeroom deep under the White Tower that holds small items of the Power (The Gathering Storm, The Tower Shakes).

Gold Frames

According to Robert Jordan’s Aes Sedai notes, the Rhuidean holding contained low gold frames that looked like they were filled with sheets of glass.

Green and Red Box

a small box that felt like ivory, covered in wavering red and green stripes; she set it down carefully without opening the hinged lid.

- The Path of Daggers, Unweaving

This box was from the Ebou Dar cache and is either with Elayne or was lost in the destruction of Caemlyn. Aviendha thinks the box holds music: hundreds and hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of tunes (Knife of Dreams, A Different Skill). One or more of them could be the melody or melodies of the Song/s.

Ishamael’s Mystery Ter’angreal

Ishamael used one of the Tower’s ter’angreal to punish and kill Jarna Malari and intimidate other Black sisters. It had been untried for centuries, since no one knew how to activate it (nor do they now). Unable to escape or be rescued, she shrieked for ten days, then died. Her body was not intact when finally recovered (A Crown of Swords, Prologue). This need not be the normal function of the ter’angreal; it may have been deliberately misused by Ishamael.

Metal Gauntlets

A set of large metal gauntlets with firedrops trimming the cuffs is in a storeroom along with other small items of the Power deep under the White Tower (The Gathering Storm, The Tower Shakes).

Set of Nested Metal Balls

These were found in the Ebou Dar cache and are:

a set of metal basketwork balls, one inside the other. Any movement produced a faint musical chime, a different tone every time, and she had the feeling that no matter how hard she looked into it, there would always be a still smaller ball waiting to be discovered.

- The Path of Daggers, A Quiet Place

They are either with Elayne, or were lost in the destruction of Caemlyn.

Shiny Black Metal Spire

A shiny black metal spire, narrow as a spear and no longer, yet standing on end as if rooted, was seen by Rand in Rhuidean (The Shadow Rising, Rhuidean). Rand thought it survived his battle with Asmodean unbroken, and it is not known whether it is in Cairhien or with the other Rhuidean ter’angreal.

According to Robert Jordan’s Aes Sedai notes there were also glittering faceted spires in the Rhuidean holding.

Tapering Crystal Plinth

A tapering crystal plinth a pace tall that might have held one of the smaller statues was seen by Rand in Rhuidean (The Shadow Rising, Rhuidean). It is not known if it survived Rand’s battle with Asmodean, and if so, whether it is in Cairhien or with the other Rhuidean ter’angreal.

Tiny Crystal Vial

A tiny crystal stoppered vial with a dark red liquid inside was found by Elayne in the Ebou Dar cache (The Path of Daggers, Unweaving). It is either with Elayne, or was lost in the destruction of Caemlyn. This item is not the same as a cour’souvra (mindtrap, see the Oddments allied to Ter'angreal section), since a cour’souvra is made of gold-wire and crystal (A Crown of Swords, Mindtrap).

Excellent article, and blog. I've been reading through many entries.

In this entry, I noticed you remarked that the Black Spire ter'angreal that stands on end as if rooted was of unknown status. In the end of The Shadow Rising, when Rand and Asmodean finish their fight, Rand notices a large pile of broken and unbroken ter'angreal, and the Spire sitting atop it, still upright and not broken at all.

Thought you oughta know,
